WHAT IS LASIK?

LASIK, or “laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis,” is the most commonly performed laser eye surgery to treat myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), and astigmatism.

Like other types of refractive surgery, the LASIK procedure reshapes the cornea to enable light entering the eye to be properly focused onto the retina for clearer vision.

A Laser procedure is SAFE, PROVEN, TRUSTED. It takes only 10 min to “change your life” get rid of your glasses. Laser vision correction has enabled millions of people worldwide to enjoy a newfound freedom-Living their lives without the inconvenience of glasses or contact lenses.

Say “Hello” to your dreams. Are you ready for your freedom ?

LASIK at BATHIA Eye Hospital is completely “SAFE” and “PAINLESS” with “Advanced laser wavefront technology” the results are consistent.

WHY SHOULD YOU CONSIDER LASER EYE SURGERY ?

LASIK PROCEDURE:

Laser steps Lasik is an acronym for laser insitu keratomileusis.

Ten-minute day care procedure which is painless, safe, and with fast recovery of vision. Making it the most popular procedure for laser vision correction.

After qualifying the eyes with a pre Lasik evaluation and after informed consent for the Lasik procedure.

The patient is prepared before the procedure with anesthetic and antibiotic eye drops, making the eye numb and sterile for the laser procedure.

A Microkeratome or a Femtosecond laser handpiece is used to create a thin corneal flap that remains hinged through the procedure.

The corneal flap is lifted and the inner stromal layers of the cornea are “Lasered” with an excimer laser to reshape the inner layer of the cornea assisted by an active eye-tracking system, tracking eye movements and directing the laser accordingly. The laser algorithms or treatment plans are computer calculated and driven to give an accurate outcome.

The flap is then replaced without the need for stitches, the entire LASIK procedure thus finishes within a few minutes.

TYPES OF LASIK:

1. CONVENTIONAL LASIK SURGERY

It corrects only the spectacle number but does not correct any other distortion.

2. OPTIMIZED LASIK SURGERY

It corrects spectacle number and optimized correction of distortions to maintain a prolate natural like cornea, thus giving better vision at night and dim illumination.

Wavefront-optimized LASIK is an enhanced version of conventional LASIK. It does not address pre-operative High Order Aberrations. The laser ablation is adjusted, based on the patient’s eyeglasses prescription and the shape of the cornea, to minimize any increase in spherical aberration induced by the treatment.

So whereas the goal of wavefront-guided LASIK is to identify and treat multiple HOAs (including spherical aberration) and refractive error during the corneal reshaping of the eye, the goal of wavefront-optimized LASIK is only to limit any increase in spherical aberration during the treatment of refractive error by the laser.

3. SMILE TECHNOLOGY

Minimally invasive surgery for correcting vision

Small Incision Lenticule Extraction with SMILE is the most recently developed type of laser eye surgery. It’s a minimally invasive procedure that can correct various vision impairments such as nearsightedness and astigmatism.

How does SMILE work?

SMILE is running on a femtosecond laser to reshape the cornea. It is performed on the Patented Carl Zeis Visumax platform. This femtosecond laser is an extremely short-pulsed, near infrared laser often also used to create a LASIK flap. The laser’s high peak intensity over a very short pulse duration (within a few femtoseconds of time) allows it to create micro-precision single holes (bubbles) that forms together cuts or planes in the corneal tissue without affecting the surrounding tissue.

It takes less than 30 seconds for the laser to create a small lens-shaped piece of corneal tissue (called the lenticule) inside the cornea. The surgeon then removes the lenticule through a small incision outer part of the eye. This reshapes the cornea and corrects the refractive error.

The femtosecond laser produces a thin layer just beneath the surface of the eye, and at the same time creates a small opening. It’s an almost silent, noiseless, odourless procedure and the patient can remain in the same position from start to finish.

Benefits

Femtosecond lasers are designed to harmlessly pass through the upper layers of the cornea, to create the lenticule only at a specific sublayer inside the cornea, which means:

  • With an incision smaller than 4mm on the eye surface, SMILE supports a minimally invasive procedure .
  • The outer layer of the cornea doesn’t have to be removed.
  • Corneal nerves stimulating the tear glands are less affected and are still able to help keep the eye lubricated. Side effects, such as dry eye syndrome, are rare after SMILE.
  • Maintaining the corneal stability is supported because the entire upper layers of the cornea are virtually unaffected.

WHAT IS FEMTOLASIK ?

Femto-Lasik is the latest laser technology intended for people who have thin corneas. Femto-Lasik is the advanced laser treatment used to treat refractive errors.

Earlier–with the older laser techniques–laser eye surgery started first on the surface of the cornea, and thereafter went deeper via a flap made in the cornea. In this older technique, the flap would be made by hand, with a mechanized blade.

With Femto-Lasik laser eye surgery, we make the flap in the cornea with the laser: the Femto-Second. The Lasik procedure is now even safer; there are much fewer risks of complications during the procedure and the flaps are much thinner. This offers a better chance of greater stability to the cornea over time.

Also known as, Bladeless Lasik – complete laser enabled procedure where bubbles are created with unmatched accuracy, precision, repeatability. Technology at its best enables the procedure to be simple, easy, safe, and unmatched precision.

BLADE LESS LASIK V/S BLADE FREE LASIK

Blade free LASIK offers the peak of technologies for laser vision correction. Blade-free has allowed laser eye surgery to attain high levels of precision, ease, and safeness for subjects. In blade-free Laser Eye Surgery, the corneal flap is produced by using a Femtosecond Laser in place of a Microkeratome (an oscillating blade) that is used in traditional Lasik surgery.

THE REASONS BLADE FREE (FEMTOSECOND LASER) LASIK IS SUPERIOR TO BLADE (MICROKERATOME) LASIK ARE MULTIPLE

Blade-free LASIK creates a flawless flap on every occasion; this doesn’t happen when using a Microkeratome. A Microkeratome can sometimes bring about a ‘button hole’ flap that fails to allow treatment to carry on and also creates a danger of scarring the cornea. Working with a Femtosecond Laser all but does away with this danger. A perfect flap means greater vision.

The slimmer flaps that a Femtosecond Laser produces are safer in the long run compared to blade flaps as the cornea post-op has greater stability as it’s wider. This minimizes the risk of an unwanted effect called Ectasia, where the cornea can bulge forward after a period of time, sometimes needing a corneal transplant to fix.

Blade-free (Femtosecond Laser) Laser Vision Correction always outperforms blade (Microkeratome) lasers in medical tests investigating visual quality. The flap profile and level of smoothness are far more advanced, giving vision as good as or better than their eyeglasses. A flap produced by means of a blade is finer on the outside and thicker on the inside, this kind of unevenness could blur vision. A Femtosecond laser (blade free) produced flap is a reliable thickness across its total diameter, minimizing the likelihood of micro-wrinkles, the ideal flap profile presenting the best feasible vision in Laser Vision Correction.

Blade free (Femtosecond Laser) LASIK allows the placement of the flap to be produced perfectly, something that’s impossible with a blade. The ophthalmologist provides a virtual image of the flap placement superimposed over the affected individual’s cornea and prior to creating it he can adjust and improve the flap position so it is correctly centered each and every time. This gives superior vision and safeness.

A Laser flap is made with a vertical side slice, which is once again something not achievable with a blade or Microkeratome flap. This immensely reduces the possibility of a problem called epithelial ingrowth, where the surface tissue of the cornea becomes seeded beneath the flap. This also facilitates a superior flap profile as the flap slides back downward similar to a miniature manhole cover. Laser Vision Correction has evolved in an exciting new direction together with the introduction of blade-free femtosecond laser flaps; it is finally delivering on the promise of the safest and most exacting procedure possible.

PREOPERATIVE TESTING

Once our doctors determine that you are a good candidate for Custom LASIK or alternative eye surgery, you will schedule a preoperative exam in our hospital. During this exam, your eyes will be dilated and our technicians will perform an array of diagnostic tests to gather all the data they need to develop the best possible surgical treatment plan.

Please Note: If you are a contact lens wearer, you must refrain from wearing contact lenses before this exam:

  • Soft lenses – 1 week before your exam
  • Toric lenses – 1 week before your exam
  • Hard or gas permeable lenses – 3 weeks for every decade of wear

Once you have completed your preoperative exam, you can have Custom LASIK eye surgery as soon as the following week!

THE CORNEA USING

STEPS TOWARDS QUALIFYING YOURSELF FOR LASIK

The first step towards deciding on LASIK begins w.ith a detailed eye examination in which we evaluate your corneal thickness, integrity, and overall eye health. All of this information will be assessed and discussed with you. The ultimate decision as to the safest and best procedure for your specific visual situation will be discussed & decided with you by the eye surgeon.

Your comprehensive eye examination would consist of

  • Detailed eye refraction – Assessing your spectacle numbers.
  • Corneal topography and Corneal evaluation with Oculus Pentacam is faster, more accurate, and more User-friendly but gives simultaneous data information about your optical aberrations end curvature of the eye. First of its kind in India to have this kind of Simultaneous corneal data analysis.
  • OCT – Cornea – To assess the pan cornea thickness (Pachymetry) and gives cross-section slices of the cornea for pre – LASIK assessment and Keratoconus screening.
  • Scheimflug imaging (Pentacam) of the anterior segment. Pentacam – This is a device that digitally maps the topography and elevation maps of the front & back surface of the cornea to define its curves and irregularities. Necessary for planning both laser vision correction, the pentacam measures corneal thickness and how steep or flat the cornea is. Most superior machine available today to detect early or subclinical Keratoconus and non-suitable cornea for LASIK.

After the detailed assessment of your eye. Data is analyzed to decide the type of LASIK treatment.

  • Optimized Aspheric Treatment (OATz)
  • Customized Aspheric Treatment (CATz) – Wavefront guided
  • Topo guided customized treatment (OPD – CAT) – Topography guided
